“My tomorrow is my decision,” said Stacey Abrams, House Minority Leader for the Georgia General Assembly and State Representative for the 89th District, as she spoke of the great decision that refugees make when they come to the United States. Over 100 community members joined their refugee friends and neighbors to make a decision about their community. On February 5, these community members celebrated the richness and contributions refugees make to the State of Georgia. They collectively decided that it was important enough to make a trip to the Capitol to engage all 236 legislators on the topic.
The New Americans Celebration is an event that illustrates the power of collaboration. Hosted by the CRSA (Coalition of Refugee Serving Agencies), the event brought together 10 different organizations plus elected city officials. In addition to Mayor Ted Terry and refugee Awet Woldegebriel, speakers also included State Representatives Stacey Abrams, Scott Holcomb, and Pedro Marin.
Our tomorrow is our decision. We were honored to be part of a celebration where people were not only celebrating their community, but raising awareness to their lawmakers.
