Susan McCoy, Early Learning Consultant, TAP Training Associates, and Roberta Malavenda, CDF Action, enjoyed a reading adventure with children and their families, Sunday, July 15, at the St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, in Stone Mountain. Sudanese families who speak Dinka meet weekly at the church at 5 p.m. and the literacy event was planned by the families as part of their interest in early learning.

Books from the DeKalb Summer Reading Program were read by the youth and by Ms. Susan — Tumble Bumble by Felicia Bond, and Seed Magic by Jane Buchanan. Each family received the books.

The youth helped serve healthy snacks to their families and younger siblings, and they promised to read Tumble Bumble to their younger brothers and sisters at home. Several of the parents are interested in attending Ms. Susan’s fall Child Development Associate (CDA) class and filled out interest applications at the event.

The family literacy activity was sponsored by CDF Action, partnership with Eat. Move. Talk!, as part of the Governors Office for Student Achievement (GOSA) mini-literacy project. Thanks to Abraham Deng Ater for helping to make the connections.
